Human Resources Manager
Job Description
The Westin/Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa is seeking a bilingual Human Resources Manager to lead onsite HR operations in Carlsbad, California. This role encompasses recruitment, development, benefits administration, safety, investigations, and training, with close collaboration to the HR Director to implement programs that bolster staff engagement and retention across the resort.
Compensation & Location
Salary: USD 72,000 - 85,000 per year
Location: Carlsbad, CA (onsite)
Education & Experience
- Four-year degree from an accredited university in Human Resources or related major
- Minimum experience: 1 year
- Three years’ experience in human resources required, OR two years’ experience in human resources if accompanied by a four-year degree in Human Resources or related major
- One year of hospitality experience
- PHR and SHRM-CP preferred
Responsibilities
- Develop and update HR policies and procedures
- Support upper management in implementing HR strategies aligned with the organizational vision
- Ensure all HR activities align with company objectives and values
- Collaborate with the HR Director to design and implement strategic HR programs that boost employee satisfaction, retention, and commitment
- Serve as a Health & Safety committee member
- Address employee concerns and provide timely solutions
- Act as a point of contact to respond to general HR inquiries
- Work with Leads to create employee development plans and Performance Improvement Plans for support teams
- Assist the HR Director with special projects such as compensation analysis, compset salary reviews, staff meetings, and the Shining Star Employee Recognition Program
- Understand and apply legal guidelines (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, OSHA, COBRA, etc.) and be aware of state versus federal differences
- Maintain an open-door policy to acknowledge employee problems or concerns in a timely manner
- Keep associates informed and maintain effective communication across the property
- Review disciplinary action forms for accuracy and consistency; determine appropriate action
- Work with Department Managers to resolve employee issues and grievances
- Ensure employee files are secure and compliant with employment paperwork and documentation
- Ensure immigration compliance related to employment; track I-9 expirations and communicate status
- Maintain confidentiality of medical records and ensure proper filing
- Assist with Workers' Compensation claims, OSHA logs, incident trend analysis, and safety team participation
- Develop and implement strategies for sourcing and attracting top talent
- Manage end-to-end recruitment process from posting to onboarding
- Assist in developing and executing recruitment strategy; use metrics to evaluate programs and adjust as needed
- Execute recruitment and onboarding processes from start to finish
- Participate in recruiting events and network with local organizations to source candidates
- Ensure recruitment and hiring practices comply with applicable laws
- Record and maintain employee information in the HRIS, including new hire data and status changes
- Lead the new hire orientation program and coordinate brand and compliance trainings
- Ensure and track brand training compliance; oversee on-the-job training tools and ongoing training initiatives
- Assist with the company-wide managers’ performance evaluation process
- Contribute to a collaborative, team-based culture and maintain effective communication channels
- Influence hiring, training, performance evaluations, discipline, and termination decisions when appropriate
- May assist in other areas of the complex as needed to support operations
- Maintain a safe work environment for colleagues and a safe hotel for guests
- Coach and counsel employees and managers as needed
- Advise the Director of Human Resources and Managing Director on potential HR opportunities
Requirements
- Speak, read, write, and understand the primary workplace languages; Spanish required
- Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision
- Proficiency with computers and HRIS systems
- Strong mathematical and data analysis capabilities
- Ability to multitask and transition between tasks without loss of efficiency

- Strong administrative, communication, and organizational skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work with employees requiring tact and diplomacy; strong customer service orientation
- Analytical, negotiation, collaboration, presentation, and project management skills
- Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing EEO, civil rights, safety, workers’ compensation, wage and hour, and labor relations (including Title VII, ADEA, Equal Pay Act, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, FLSA, ADA, OSHA, FMLA, ERISA, NLRA)
- Physical requirements: sit up to 6 hours per day; walk and stand for remaining time; ability to travel as needed; lift up to 15 lbs occasionally
