Job Description

Real Estate Tax Attorney role, a full-time, in-office position onsite in Homewood, IL, at Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit, focusing on property tax appeals for income-producing and owner-occupied properties. The position requires at least 2 years of experience and offers a starting salary of $115,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit complaints, briefs, and evidentiary materials for property tax appeal matters affecting both income-producing and owner-occupied properties.
  • Review assessment records, valuation histories, and related documents to formulate effective appeal strategies.
  • Oversee property tax appeals for complex development projects, including new construction, major renovations, and demolition issues.
  • Track filings, assist with court appearances, and support document production for tax objection cases in Circuit Court.
  • With proper training and experience, contribute to the economic development aspects of property tax appeals, including incentive programs such as Class 6b, Class 7, Class 8, and Tax Increment Financing (TIF).
  • Maintain appeal dockets and manage all steps to obtain, monitor, and renew incentive classifications such as Class 6b and Class 8.
  • Assist with tax proration matters and other related projects as assigned.
  • Communicate clearly with clients about appeal status, data requests, outcomes, and strategic recommendations.
  • Coordinate with county representatives on hearings, scheduling, settlements, refunds, and related matters.
  • Prepare and maintain professional written correspondence and documentation.
  • Participate in all continuing legal education trainings.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active Illinois law license in good standing.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment with confidential matters.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to handle multiple deadlines and a varied workload independently.
  • Professionalism, tact, and diplomacy when communicating with clients, appraisers, and government officials.
  • Ability to interpret complex assessment data and apply sound judgment to nuanced and sensitive matters.
  • Must be able to commute to Homewood, IL 60430.
  • Relocation to Homewood, IL 60430 before start date is required.
